Types of ESL/EFL Schools & Programs

 

 

 Here is a brief synopsis of school types that may help you find a program or situation that is right for you.

 

Universities

 

Offering a BA or BS degress, University programs usually require proof of ability as measured by tests and interviews.

 

JR Colleges

 

Offering an AA degree, entry requirements are easier and JR Colleges can often serve as a stepping stone to a University program.

 

Intenives English Programs

 

IEP Programs are designed to give students the skills to enter a foreign University.  Heavy focus on grammar and vocabulary building as well as conversational English.

 

Conversation Schools

 

Including both franchises and local individual schools, these schools offer students the chance to keep up with their English by providing an opportunity for conversation with a native speaker.

 

Cram Schools

 

Usually for students from elementary to High School level, cram school reinforce and review skills needed to pass the regular school tests.

 

Private Lessons

 

Many students and teachers prefer one on one lessons in person allowing the student to grow at their own pace.

 

Skype Lessons

 

A recent development, Skype lessons allow for a private or group lesson from the comfort of your home by using a camera, computer and microphone.

 

Vocational Colleges

 

Training to be a cook, flight attendant, dental assistant, etc may require some English training.

 

Non-Academic Certificate Programs

 

A variety of certification is available as a TEFL teacher, teacher of children, grammar specialist, or instruction in a variety of methods.

 

Working Holiday Programs

 

Many countries have agreements allowing non citizens to work abroad for a limited period while studying the language.

 

Exchange Programs

 

High Schools, Colleges and private programs are available to exchange a year/semester with a student from another country.

 

Homestay/Vacation-Study Programs

 

Stay with a host family, and enjoy your vacation time exploring and learning about a new destination while improving your lanaguage skills.

 

English Camps

 

Mainly for 12-17 year olds, kids can join a small group for a traveling adventure while using their non native language.

 

Seminars

 

A variety of seminars are available in English on a host of topics.

You can connect with foreigners from around the world through mail or e-mail based correspondence.
